Chapter eleven

When Carly opened her eyes on New Year’s Day, it was after ten o’clock in the morning. The sun was trying to break through the clouds and she could smell the remnants of the early morning rain. When the weather reflected her emotions like this, she could almost imagine that she was controlling it, and given her newfound powers, sometimes she wondered if she was.

She looked over to Leo’s side and found the bed empty. He must already be up and making coffee or out for an early dip in the ocean. Being a selkie had its advantages, she thought. There was no way she would brave the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean in January herself. Chilled by the thought, Carly rolled out of bed and took a very quick and very hot shower. After drying off, she threw on the warm sweater and jeans she had chosen for the New Year and ambled into the kitchen where she found Paul sitting at the table sipping his coffee. “Good morning and Happy New Year,” she smiled.

“Happy New Year,” Paul said. “Want some coffee?”

“Absolutely. I’ll get it. Stay put.” Carly grabbed a white mug with a pink seashell on it out of the cabinet and poured a dollop of half-and-half into it. She added the coffee from the pot and took a seat opposite him.

Nicodemus sauntered into the kitchen and meowed so plaintively, that Carly jumped up to feed him and change his water before sitting down again.

“What are the plans for today?” Paul asked as she added a sweetener to her mug.

“Back to the ‘rents,” she smiled. “Where else?”

“You guys are really tight, huh?”

“Better get used to it if you’re going to date my sister.” She took a sip of the heavenly brew. “We’re pretty clingy.”

“I noticed,” Paul grinned. “More football, then?”

“Yep. Football and beer, then Mom will stuff everyone again with one of her traditional Italian meals.” Carly looked wistfully out the window. “Did Leo go for a swim?”

“Yeah. He’s more of a polar bear than I am.”

Carly heard the shower go on down the hall and her eyes filled.

“Hey.” Paul reached out and covered her hand with his own. “You okay?”

She sniffed and smiled a bit too brightly. “Sure. I’m fine.”

He studied her for a moment and nodded. “It’s okay to feel sad. But it’s not like they’re leaving forever, Carly. You know you can go visit anytime you like. Leo has a personal interest in those planes he charters.”

Her eyebrows shot up. “He does?”

“Yes,” Paul chuckled. “He and I are partners in it. Dunnemar Charters. We figured it made sense since we travel so much. He didn’t tell you?”

“No,” she shook her head. “But then I never asked.”

“How come?”

“It never occurred to me. My interest in Leo is for Leo.” Carly leaned forward. “I know he always seems to have money and pays for everything, but I figured it was his family’s money from the boat charter business. I guess it never really occurred to me that he may have his own business.
